The Good, The Bad & The Painful: a weekend recap

Hey guys! Happy Tuesday to you all…I hope this post finds you living life to the fullest and embracing the day! I can’t say I always feel that optimistic (or as optimistic as I might appear on the blog), but I have reason to be joyful (the good!):

– God continues to pursue me and love me even when I’m not pursuing him.

– My husband is gracious and kind to me and is someone I have a blast being around.

It’s been a few days since I’ve updated the blog, so I have a few things to share with you guys! First of all, a run gone bad, then a great weekend that was hard on the legs but memory-making. Shall we? Be prepared for an overload of pictures…Let’s do it!

A Rough Run (the bad)

Friday was the first day of the Calgary Stampede and the morning of the parade (it’s the 100th year celebration so everything is EXTRA big and celebratory!), meaning downtown is an absolute mess to get into and many people have the day off work in the downtown offices. Only 50 people came into the gym all day Friday! Since I only had 1 client lined up I shifted him to another day and stayed home. Excited to have a morning off (home clients later that day), I decided to go for a long run, something I hadn’t done in a few weeks.

My goal? 10 miles. The verdict? A terrible run.

Let’s be real about something. Bad runs, bad workouts, bad days happen. This was one of those runs. I wasn’t properly fueled, I was definitely dehyrdated on a hot day, and the day before I had worked my hamstrings with many dead lifts and done this 2 mile, 25 minute interval workout from Naomi. I didn’t think much of it as I was so excited to get outside and go long with no time constraints, but everything was ripe for a bad run. I ended up making my 5 mile turn-around spot with a few walk breaks and greatly struggled to get back home, walking most of the way home on the tightest hamstrings I’ve ever experienced! I accepted it rather than got down on myself, which helped my attitude greatly, and didn’t even feel like I’d run when I arrived back home. Oh well – such is life! I took an ice bath, shook my head and smiled at my poor decision making, and went on with the day.

Trashing the Legs, Making Memories (the painful)

After a sleepy Saturday morning that included sleeping in and healthified pancakes, Mikey and I suddenly got struck with the urge to head out and sleep on a mountain – a mini adventure, as we like to call them. So after wrapping some things up and packing our gear, we headed out to Canmore to pick a mountain to summit (keep in mind I didn’t think we were hiking Saturday so my legs, now thoroughly tired, weren’t quite anticipating such an adventure). 😉

By 7 pm we were hiking with our packs up Mt. Lady MacDonald which started with a bang and continued to climb up, up, upwards.

[Oh! I also tried new hairstyles with my dreads this weekend…more on that in an upcoming post! The above picture shows “loc knots” – it was like I had short hair! What do you think?!]

I think this was the slowest I’ve EVER hiked…and despite my complaining (I’m a bit of a complainer hiker, I’ll admit it) and sore legs (oh! and sore belly – we ate a pound of cherries on the way out = BAD IDEA), I was so glad to be out there with Mikey. He was so supportive and encouraging to me, not making me feel slow or down but keeping a steady pace and helping me move forward.

At 10 pm we made it to the top and got to work creating our bivvy site on the summit ridge.

Instantly I felt better and full of energy as I took in the view and enjoyed the moment with my husband – we are so blessed to get out for this amazing, short adventure in God’s beautiful Creation! What a refreshing moment.

There was not a breath of wind at the top; we sat with lemon tea and took in the view from our incredible bed before falling asleep on a hot night, marmots whistling around us and the sound of a few cars on the highway far below us.

The next morning we awoke and enjoyed breakfast in shorts and t-shirts – an amazing thing after being used to winter camping! We packed up our gear and left it there while we hiked the ridge to the true summit, enjoying the ridge walk and the view of the mountains.

We took our time at the top, attempting several jumping pictures and sneaking a kiss in (you GOTTA kiss on the summit!) before grabbing our packs and literally running almost the entire way down the mountain (yes, my legs were jello and screaming!). We’re training (loosely) for a trail run later this summer and took this as an opportunity to trash our legs – in the best way possible.

It was an incredible, quick trip. We drove down, fueled up on the good stuff, and drove out to meet Mikey’s parents at Lake Louise for a hike up to Annette Lake on a beautiful, hot Sunday. The time spent with them was great and we were thankful for an easier walk to stretch our still-trembling legs. What a weekend!

And that’s the last few days in a nut shell. Since then I’ve been back to training with a few full days under hot sun – thankful for that finally in Calgary!
