Food, Fitness & Fun Friday!

Hey guys! Happy Friday to you all! Here’s to the end of the work week and another day of life to live. Make it a good one, whether you can’t wait to get out of your cubicle or you’re chasing your little one around at home. Everything we do counts! Remember that today.

I’m just checking in at the end of the week with some updates in the food department, the workout realm, and our home – I thought it’d be fun to give you a little taste of where we currently reside so stay tuned for the video at the end!

cake dinner

It’s been a good week of eats! Although I didn’t photograph all of it, above are snapshots of some of the tasty foods, including a chocolate cake (no real substitutions for “health” purposes but also not too unhealthy either!) topped with powdered sugar for small group on Tuesday and a bowl of “Hail to the Kale Salad” from our local natural grocery store (DELICIOUS!) with fig goat cheese and a small glass of wine. Oh – and that’s our “faux fire” in the background. Nice, hey? Winking smile

handsome man sunset

I also said goodbye to this handsome man as Mikey’s out sailing getting his skipper’s license! It’s cold and snowy on the water but we chatted briefly and he’s doing okay! I’m excited he’s taking this course as he’ll be able to skipper a boat solo in the future (which is great as we run sailing trips with young adult cancer survivors every summer)! Very cool.

Another cold day (hopefully one of the last for a while!), which means I kept my workout inside and did something I haven’t done for ages – a workout DVD! I followed the P90X Cardio workout and enjoyed warming up for the workout with yoga. I hardly ever practice yoga, and generally I’m okay with that. I think it’s it’s okay that it’s not my favorite and just because it seems (and is) so healthy doesn’t mean I have to make myself do it. However, there are benefits, and occasionally I like to get it in because I’m very undisciplined when it comes to stretching. Gotta stretch to lengthen those muscles back out after pounding (and subsequently shortening) them after a workout or run!

I grabbed these boxing gloves Mikey got at a cancer fundraiser and put them on for fun during the “kenpo” portion of the workout. Made me feel intense so I self-timer-ed a quick photo in between moves. Winking smile

Do you ever do workout DVD’s? What are your favorites?

Are you a fan of yoga? I’ve tried Bikram and like the hot portion of it but the movements really hurt my body, and I stuck with it for a while. I think I’d like a flow type of class with lots of vinyasas (it might be wrong, but I still like to feel like I’m getting a workout!)…Any recommendations?

Today, however, is a rest day. I’d decided this before I checked out Lindsay’s blog today, but she talks all about it in a vlog today. Check it out if you’re in need of a reminder of how important rest is, made doubly clear by this quote from Ryan Hall:

“I constantly remind myself that resting takes confidence. Anyone can train like a mad man but to embrace rest and to allow all the hard training to come out takes mental strength.”

I receive weekday inspirational quotes from Runner’s World and this one struck me. If we’re working out so hard and pushing our bodies consistently, we need to also have the grace and respect for ourselves to allow time for rest.

These boots (sorry the pic is a bit skewed) are definitely fun to me…and I have no idea where they came from! – Mom? Are these from you? They’re super cute, seriously keep my legs warm in this cold, and are fun to pull on. Open-mouthed smile

Last but not least, here’s a little tour of our home! I hope you enjoy this little glance into our world in the SW corner of Calgary:

…Anything to report on the food, fitness or fun fronts? Let’s hear it! Have a great weekend friends. Live well & be well today and in every moment,

I just ran across your blog and LOVE it!! Such fun!
I too am not a big fan of yoga, and part of me does feel bad about it. I want to like it, but I am just not that into it. I do like to do hot yoga about once a month at a local gym, but more so because I like the hot portion and suffer my way through the yoga portion.
I love the P90X cardio video, it’s a great workout mixing lots of different styles in!
Great blog! I look forward to reading more!!!

LOVED LOVED this little glimpse into your world! We don’t wash our dishes in the bathroom (but almost), but we have a teeny house. Maybe I’ll do a tour?

  • Melissa @ Live, Love, & Run says:

Dang girl!!! You DO have some abs! Haha. Saw Christine’s tweet about it.

Loved getting a peek into someone else’s life. PS: My husband heads to Calgary once in a while on business! I hear it’s BEAUTIFUL up there. 🙂

So excited that it’s finally going to warm up! And it’s going to be sunny for the week…I am looking forward to it 🙂

Just watched your video and loved it! Though my dog Harley couldn’t figure out where your voice was coming from, haha. What part of the city are you in?

  • Sabrina @ Radioactive Runner says:

Bonnie.. I LOVE YOU!! Gustavo and I just watched your video together and we both finished with an “awe, I love Bonnie!” Thanks for the tour 🙂 I really like the set up you guys have and love how you make it work. You’re so honest and real and I just love that about you. Gustavo says “that you were kind of rude because you didn’t introduce us to your buddy “sleeping” at your kitchen table (at 3:02)”… haha I had no idea what he was talking about but he insisted we watch it again so he could show me. So funny! He also says that he is looking forward to the next photo shoot with you and we both wished you and Mikey lived closer. We love you guys! I’m glad the temps are getting a bit warmer for you. I really like the motivational quote you uploaded too.. I just love those! I’m off to bed.. I’m waking up early to run 18km.. eek.. here’s hoping it’s not to cold out. xoxo

    • Bon says:

Thanks for the great note, Sabrina! You know what?! That “little buddy” on the table is apple cider vinegar! (Is that what you were referring to? I went and checked at 3:02 and thought maybe it looked like booze? Let me know if I’m wrong!) And hey – you know at least I am ALWAYS up for a photo shoot, my friend! 😉 Love you guys too! Have a great rest of your week.

  • Heather says:

Hey Bonnie! I love yoga and love it more now than when I started. I started about 8 years ago, mostly through videos and classes at the gym and I was looking for something that gave me a good workout without making me run. I viewed it as being similar to dance and loved the focus on stretching. Two years ago i started taking classes at a yoga studio and my entire experience of yoga changed. I now see it as so much more than stretching. It’s a spiritual practice, it’s disciplining me to care for my body, clean my house, speak kindness, build relationships, and it also is teaching me about my strengths and weaknesses, strengthening my body and increasing my flexibility. As a bonus, because of yoga and eating well, I weigh ten pounds less than before I had Max and have more muscle tone and a flatter tummy than I’ve had in ten years. I’m also learning how to heal from injuries and protect myself from future ones.

The biggest thing I’ve seen is how yoga works in harmony with the body. It shouldn’t hurt, and if it does, something needs to be modified. It’s really important to study it with an instructor to know how to modify the poses for you. My belief is that if you don’t love yoga yet, then it’s worth another look in another way. I think Bikram and flow classes appeal to those who love aerobic exercise (so it makes sense you want to start there) and there are even more benefits out there in the quieter or slower approaches especially in improving your breathing, alignment, and flexibility, if you’re interested in finding out more. I’m loving learning how to breathe, how to stand, how to sit, and how to be still. I’m currently studying with instructors trained in Anusara and Ashtanga yoga, and I’m loving it. Would love to chat more about it!

Love your blog and love you!

Bonnie, go back to 3:02 and look at the jacket on the chair/table… and then you will see what Gustavo was talking about lol.. it looks like someone is sleeping on the table there haha 🙂
