WIAW: A Food & Move Hodge Podge

IMG_0135 IMG_0138

Two great things happened Monday after posting my recap of our epic sailing trip (have you checked it out yet? So many inspiring stories and some great photos too!). After getting loads of work done around the house, I finally decided I needed to get outside, even though it was a chilly gray out. I grabbed some dried cherries, wrapped them in saran wrap, and jogged away, hoping to get some long miles in after being on the water for a week. My goal? Over 10 miles. I ended up running out for an hour and then back, with my revised goal being to hit negative splits for that last half of the run. Since it was looking like a 2 hour run, I was hoping that meant about 13 miles, and when I got home at 1:59:12 (negative splits, wahoo!), I mapped my run and discovered to my delight that I covered 13.7 miles! I was thrilled! And not so cold anymore – that red face above is after about 40 minutes of having “cooled down.” Felt great today and was so glad to get a long, very September-feeling run in yesterday. Open-mouthed smile

Secondly, I got a package from my mom in the mail! Isn’t that just the absolute best? I love going to the mailbox and getting something personal, especially when there are fun treats inside, like CANDY CORN and RED & BLACK licorice (not “real” but also not available in Canada – talk about my favorite candy and a real nostalgic food for me!). I literally danced around the kitchen for probably about 3 minutes chanting/screaming/yelping because I was so excited. You may not have known, but candy makes my heart sing. Winking smile I’ve done well at just a few pieces a day (meaning about 20 total) and my goal is to see how long I can make them last.

Edited to add: I ate WAY too many from both piles tonight, but I enjoyed every bite! AND I shared them. Winking smile

She also included 2 cute sweaters; I’m modeling one above. Thanks, mom!

More things to get excited about:

  • Lindsay’s Tuesday Trainer! Check out this post for what this new weekly round up of exercises is and this one to see how the first edition turned out. The focus was on plyometrics (one of my favorites!); I was too busy to submit a video but you can bet I will be in on this from now on! Thumbs up
  • The start up of Fat Tuesday! This is our name for our small group – we meet, we share a meal and often a glass of wine, and share stories, thoughts, and talk about things that matter. We read a book or a passage in the Bible and connect over food and fellowship, but we call it “Fat Tuesday” because we eat and we eat well. Now that summer’s over, we’re back in routine and tonight was the first night back! My friend Nicole, 6 weeks after having a baby, held a plank for 1 min. 30 sec! I was SO proud, as her pre-baby trainer and friend. Open-mouthed smile Way to go, Nicole!
  • Also excited about…September! Today was another cold and gray day – we even had a fire on! – and even though I’m sad that the summer sun is over, I’m also excited about the crunchy leaves underfoot on a run, the crisp air that takes your breath away, the fresh feeling of a new start to a new season.
    • Admittedly a little less excited about this today: Screenshot_1

When summer’s over in Calgary, it’s really over!

Onto today’s WIAW goodness…

…yesterday’s eats!

Breakfast was my adaptation of Tina’s smoothie with spinach & granola but without the banana or extra sugar…didn’t taste the best because of those additions! Oh well…filled me up until lunch later!

From this easy, delicious recipe to go with unpictured meatless enchiladas

A great, unique recipe from Ashley! Loved it, but had no cocoa powder and the blended choco chips didn’t add quite enough sweetness…good, but my version was rather bean-y. Winking smile

Thanks, Jacque, for the cantelope & fro-yo (even though I mainly had candy…lol!).

Thanks once again for hosting, Jenn!

Today will be a great day…a chilly morning to stay inside, drink some coffee, read a bit of Nehemiah as I’m going through it in the Bible, some blogs, and squeeze a morning workout in. Later Mikey’s off to work and I’ll prepare some workouts for clients that I will hopefully start with next week, and then tonight we’re going to a badminton tournament with friends! Looking forward to sweating it out and having some fun.

Speaking of fun, here’s a workout for YOU to squeeze in at home today!BodyRock workout: simple and effective; I loved this one yesterday! I plan to keep it in my regulars rotation, swapping moves out for others but enjoying the foundation of the moves:

Quick & Effective At-Home Workout:

(on the website: “Bad Girl WorkoutWinking smile)

Perform each move for 50 seconds, record your score while recovering for 10 sec, then move right into the next exercise. Complete the three moves for a total of 6 rounds, minimizing break from little to no rest in between each move.

  • Jump Rope: High Knees: Don’t have a jump rope? Just mimic the motion with your hands/arms!
  • Squat with Weight: I used 15 lbs in each hand, focused on low, deep squats, and tried to do press ups with the weights for my shoulders on half the reps (I averaged 20 squats in the time allotted with meant 10 tough shoulder press ups too!). You could also use a kettlebell or sandbag as your weight.
  • Knee Ups: using a dip station or two chairs, hoist yourself up and then raise your knees to your chest. Control your legs down and repeat!

My scores for the 3 moves in 6 rounds were, respectively:

Jump Rope: 120, 110, 100, 110, 110, 120

Squat (w/Press Ups): 20, 19.5, 20, 20, 21, 25

Knee Ups: 26, 27, 26, 27, 24, 24

Tiring but oh-so-good! Let me know if you give it a whirl!

What things are you looking forward to? What’s making you excited right now? I’d love to hear about them!

Have a great day friends – live well & be well on this mid-week day,

Thanks for the shout out, girly!! You had my attention at candy corn – I may or may not have eaten an entire bag over the weekend. It just screams FALL!!
I’m looking forward to working on our play. We’re doing Wizard of Oz in November, so were now in rehearsals nearly every night from 7-9. I’m Ms. Gulch – she’s the wicked witch in Kansas who rides the bike!! I have lines and everything. Super excited (and scared).

  • Sabrina says:

Bonnie, I’m so glad you’re back! You should be SO proud of yourself for that wicked run you got in.. way to go 🙂
What a sweet Mom you have.. receiving snail mail IS the absolute best, I agree. Especially in this day and age when we all rely on email so much. It sounds like you have a lot to look forward too.. that’s great 🙂 I’m also looking forward to cooler mornings and trees changing colors but I have to admit, I feel kind of sad that summer is over. With no humidity though, it definitely makes for a more peaceful sleep!!

  • Lindsay says:

OH YA, i did that workout too. Nice and heart pumpin! But I am more impressed with your running legs. Maybe next time you should try fueling up on red vines? jk.
    Love the fat tuesday idea!
